Name Tape / Service Tape, OCP, USAF

OCP USAF Embroidered Name & Service Tapes

Spice Brown (67196) embroidery on OCP material, worn on the OCP uniform coat: the Name Tape upper right, the USAF Tape upper left, and the Name Tape on the back of the patrol cap.

Upper right, upper left, back of the cap

On the OCP uniform coat, the Name Tape sits at the upper right and the USAF Tape sits at the upper left. The Name Tape has a second place to be worn: the back of the patrol cap. That makes two tapes with two jobs. One says who is wearing the uniform. The other says which service issued it.

A name tape is read from across a room, on a person who is moving, so it has to be legible at a glance. That puts the weight on the embroidery: letters that hold their edges, an even fill, thread that keeps its color. Lions Industries makes both tapes at its plant at 4126 Berkeley Ave in Kinston, North Carolina.

Spice Brown 67196 on OCP material, 5 inches by 1

Both tapes are embroidered in Spice Brown, thread color 67196, directly on OCP material, and each finishes at 5 inches long and 1 inch tall. The Name Tape carries NSN 8455-00-NIB-0153 and the Service Tape carries NSN 8455-00-NIB-0154. Holding one color number across every tape is what keeps a unit looking like one unit: two tapes made to the same specification should never read as two different browns.

The work happens in the Military Embroidery department, which runs embroidery machines alongside specialized fusing and velcro equipment. Operator positions there call for usable vision.

People who are blind or visually impaired work at this plant. Since 1971 its mission has been employment in a setting that gives both income and dignity, with no compromise on the quality of the product.

Lackland AFB, San Antonio, supplied since 2002

The tapes are made for Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, and issued each. Lions Industries has supplied them since 2002, the year the plant moved into its 40,500 square foot building on Berkeley Avenue.

Most Lions Industries products go to the Federal Government under the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act, which requires the plant to meet competitive quality and price standards. The plant holds ISO 9001:2015 certification, certificate no. A-702. No prices are published on this site, and federal orders run through the agency.
